  1. Are those images taken in Second Life? If so, how?

  3. Do you think that is honest advertising? How does the buyer know it really looks like that in Second Life?

  5. No offence meant to you personally, Nadia. I just think it raises a very valid and important ethical issue. We can all use photoshop, poser, whatever, to make fancy pictures and that’s wonderful. But it’s not honest. In fact, it’s false advertising. Especially in Second Life where we ALL sell and buy stuff based primarily on the vendor ad.

  7. If they offer demos, then I really don’t think it matters how they depict the watch. They could create a version in RL and put it on a model and photograph that and use that as their in-world ad, if they wished.

Now, if they did not provide demos, that would be unethical it seems to me, because then I’d have no way of knowing how it looks in-world.

Commercial photography is by its very nature deceptive. Everyone tries to photo their goods in the most appealing fashion they can manage, even though those are particular conditions that aren’t often met in SL when you take into account things like LOD, Windlight, time of day lighting, and so on. There’s nothing wrong with an idealized image, so long as there’s some truth in the advertising — in this case, the advertisment will lead you to try a demo of the product, and you can see for yourself.

The danger with YV’s photos (which are quite accomplished just as images) is that people will try the demo and then realize that no, they don’t magically turn into high-poly count, professional 3D meshes when they put on her work, and not buy them out of some sort of disappointment.
